Five Scenic Spots Seniors Would Love in Kunming

Kunming, the city with lush greenery and gorgeous flowers all year round, is not just a transfer destination in Yunnan Province, but a rather slow-paced, yet exciting city in Southwest China. Here, we have gathered five scenic spots in this spring city for you and your family, especially seniors, who might prefer getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city and to find a quiet space to chill in Kunming.

 

Cuihu (Green Lake) Park

Located at the foot of Luofeng Hill and the western part of Wuhua Hill, Cuihu (Green Lake) Park was named as “Cai Hai Zi”, meaning a sea of vegetables. It is said that there were nine water springs on the northeastern of the lake, therefore it also used to be called “Jiu Long Chi”, which stands for “a pond with nine dragons”. And today, due to its abundance of verdure, people call it Cuihu, or Green Lake. There is a saying goes like: You cannot have the authentic experience of Kunming unless you make a day trip to Cuihu.

Daguanlou (Grand View) Park

Daguanlou Park encompasses emerald green spaces, lush flowers, bridges, pavilions and a crystal clear body of water, making visitors feel calm and relaxed. The most well known Daguan (Grand View) Mansion was established during the Kangxi Qing Dynasty. Among other couplets, the most famous one is called the Lengthened Couplet of Kunming Daguanlou Mansion (Daguanlou Mansion), which is carved into both sides of the gateposts of the mansion. Each year, the park holds different themed events, such as flower exhibition, art shows and traditional lantern festival, etc. You can also take the boat from one of the docks in the park to go to Dianchi Lake to experience the view of the so-called highland pearl.

Xihua Park

If the Green Lake Park is your first destination in Kunming, then Xihua Park should be your second stop in the city centre. Situated on Xiba Road, this park also enjoys a convenient location that is easy to get around. It is one of the major parks in Kunming that has tremendous flower exhibitions in four seasons. During the weekend, people gather in here, camping, BBQing and children playing around.

Dianchi Lake

Being the largest fresh water in Yunnan Province, Dianchi Lake is also the sixth largest of its sort in China. Surrounded by several scenic spots, such as Xishan (West Hills) Forest Park and Yunnan Nationalities Village, Dianchi Lake enjoys astonishing view in different seasons from different angles. You can walk around Haigeng Park or simply take a cable car from the foot to the top of the West Hills. During winter, the Dianchi Dam is one of the top spots to appreciate the red beak sea gulls from Siberia.

West Hills                                         

Biji (Green Rooster) Hills was the then name for West Hills. Dianchi Lake separates West Hills and Jinma (Golden Horse) Hills, which forms a spectacular view of the area. And from a certain angle, the stretches of the West Hills look like a lying lady beside the Dianchi Lake. Therefore, people also call it the Sleeping Beauty of the West Hills.
