Things to do during the Dragon Boat Festival in Kunming

The traditional Duanwujie (Duanwu Festival or the Dragon Boat Festival) is just around the corner. Wondering where to go and what to do during the three-day holiday? Here we’ve sorted out three places around Kunming that you can enjoy with family and friends.

Yunnan Nationalities Village

Located in the southwest of Kunming and the northeast shore of the Dianchi Lake, it only takes about 20 minutes to drive from city centre. It is a theme park, which displays the colorful cultures of 25 minority groups in Yunnan Province through shows and performances as well as architectural practices.

During the Dragon Boat Festival, Yunnan Nationalities Village will have two Dragon Boat Races near the Jinyu Lake everyday (11:00-11:40; 15:30-16:10).

While from 14:40, a marvelous show “The Call of the Plateau” will be on show on the Dianchi Stage. It covers dynamic and rich ethnic culture from 15 special ethnic groups of Yunnan.

And you can enjoy “Colourful Zongzi (a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves)”, “Colourful rice”, BBQ and Yunnan rice noodles and a great variety of Yunnan local food in Daogan Square.

Night time activities

From 19:10 to 21:30, one can only pay 35 yuan to entre the village to enjoy the bonfire themed activities.

Please note: Achang Village, De’ang Village and Jingpo Village are the ONLY open villages during night time. And please entre via the East Gate of the Village.

Yeyahu Scenic Area

During the Dragon Boat Festival, Yeyahu Scenic Area will continue to have the “windmill” themed activities.

There are over 30,000 artisanal small windmills and 80 windbells decorating the 150 metres long “Windmill Wishing Corridor”. To make a wish while walking through this delightful corridor will put a smile on your face. And kids love the pretty and vivid windmills.

On the outer part of the Yeyahu Development Training centre, another 40 metres long corridor was also eye-catching. It takes some courage to walk through the glass plank where you can see the lake beneath, but it’s quite fun.

Kunming Expo Park

The Ice Sculpture World of the Kunming Expo Park covers an area of 1,500 sqm and it had applied 15,000 ice bricks and more than 20 colors to decorate it. All the colour ingredients are edible grade pigments. And all the ice sculptures are designed and made by renowned international ice sculpture artists. The theme park has 8 ice areas that contain 3 ice related programmes. Visitors could even experience “snowing” and ice-skating.
